Beyond the Line ESSAY

Essay
Would you rather have George or Lennie as a Friend?

In life many friends will come and go. If I had to choose between Lennie and George I will go with Lennie as a friend. The reason why I would choose Lennie over George is because I feel like he would not try to hurt me and would always be their for me. I always feel like I would show Lennie how to be more independent because I no he can be. I would also choose him as a friend because he is loving and caring deep down inside. These things are all great things I look in when picking friends and feel that Lennie would show them more then George.
In past friendships I have had friends come and go for all the wrong reasons. I feel that Lennie would be there whenever I needed him and would love me even more if I give him a pet. Lennie treated George very nice and did mainly what ever he wanted him to do.
I believe that people treat Lennie less then he is really made up to be. I think he loves animals and there is nothing wrong wit that. i think that with Lennie i would be ale to teach him new things and sow him things couldn't.
Lennie has a disability
In conclusion i feel thathe wouls be a much better friend . Because i can show him things and get him better him

Test

Test: Between the Line

Was there a time in this book when you thought that Candy's dog was symbolic to anyone?

To me the dog represented Crooks. The dog was dieing slowly and he knew he wouldn't be around for long. i believe they treated Crooks like a die dog. They were both good for one thing and then when they were done with them they treated them however they wanted to. The dog was lifeless because he was ageing as time went on and Crooks wasn't really ageing but lacking life because they worked him like a young slave. i feel the dog and crooks were two important people in the book and should have been treated better then they did.

English Article

Article by: Cornelius O. Talley JR.
Do students agree with the SCHEDULE at Constitution High School?

How would you like it if when you came to work on day your schedule was one way and the next day you came your schedule was another way?
For the students at Constitution High School, their schedule is in block periods, 90 minutes classes. Their day is broken down into four days. One day might be 1,2,3,4 and the next day will be 4,1,2,3
For students at Con High they don’t really like this; and for others they do. Student Melissa (10th grader) said “ it is better because if we didn’t have this schedule if we were late to school we would not be able to go to first period, and I that case we would fail”
The timing of the day is every thing for some people but in Philadelphia Schooling System kids most have at least an 8 hour day, School District Packet.
Some students say they love the schedule because they only have four classes a day and that is good for them grade wise.
Constitution High School students have tried to change the schedule but some things have stopped the them, but they are back at it again who knows what will be the outcome of the new SCHEDULE.

Civil War Essay

Solders: Civil War Topic

“Around 3 million men fought in the Civil War. As many as a third of these soldiers died or were wounded in battle. Even for those who escaped without injury, the war exacted a tremendous cost. Soldiers had to leave their homes and families for up to four years while enduring numerous hardships” (Hart, 124) In promise of making the Civil War better with new weapons, it didn’t help the War at all. In result it made the war even deadlier by killing more soldiers because of the weapons (Hart, 124). The Civil War changes the lives of soldiers in very bad ways. Many soldiers were away from their love ones for long periods at a time, and in some cases they didn’t return home. Soldiers in the Civil War spent most of their time writing letters. For the soldiers letters where away for them to spend their down. The soldiers also made songs and put on plays to make up time when the where free. The soldiers had to do what ever they could do to keep them, occupied (Hart, 125). While in the Civil War many soldiers that got hurt in battle died because they didn’t have the proper care from surgeons that were supposed to have are taken care of them (Hart, 125).
The cost of the Civil War was The Union placed a strangle hold on Southern exports, split the South in half by controlling the Mississippi River and New Orleans and then fought a war of attrition that led to the eventual surrender of all Southern forces (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_happened_during_the_Civil_War). As the soldiers tried to make do with the free time they had it wasn’t easy always. In the war some soldiers ate better then others, for example The Union soldiers mostly ate hardtack, meat (salted pork, bacon, or beef), flour, and cornmeal while the Confederate soldiers mostly ate cornmeal, meat, and dried peas. The soldiers did not eat lots of food; sometimes they didn’t even get to eat. The soldiers were not really able to wash, and wore some of the same clothes for days at a time. The soldiers slept in tents; they slept on rugs and homemade pillows and sometimes even the ground; and they also had to sleep in horse poop sometimes (wiki.answer.com). The Union and Confederate armies were haphazardly raised, badly organized, poorly trained, inadequately fed, clothed and housed, and almost wholly without comforts, sports, entertainments or proper medical care.
New Weapons for the Civil War was not such a good idea. The new weapon called the Rifled Musket, had grooves on the inside of the barrel that caused the bullet to spin, allowing it to travel much faster, farther, and with greater accuracy. (Hart, 124) As a result of this new weapon it allowed armies to let loose fire on their own opponents and in some cases kill or harm them. The old tactics and the new weapons was not the best idea because instead of spreading the troops out with the new weapons they placed them closer together which made it a greater impact on one’s own side. Meaning the soldiers where hurting themselves more then the people that they were fighting in the War. As horrible and terrifying the war was over 50 years later soldiers still have thoughts of the war. The state that, “The screaming and bursting of shells…. The death screams of wounded animals”(Hart, 124). Post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD, is among only a few mental disorders that are triggered by a disturbing outside event, quite unlike other psychiatric disorders such as depression (/www.emedicinehealth.com/post-traumatic_stress_disorder_ptsd/article_em.htm). This disease was one of the most common diseases for most of the soldiers of the Civil War, because of some of the things that they went through. The war had such an affect on soldiers that it stuck with them for long periods at a time.
“I am in hopes that I will get a whole package of letters from you in a few days. I never wanted to see you half as bad in all my life as I do now”
(http://spec.lib.vt.edu/cwlove/jcmorris.html). Sometimes soldiers got so down in out that the only way of freedom or even peace was through a package of letters that they got from the people they loved, but sometimes the letters they received didn’t always make them happy. The soldiers also made up lots of songs that give lead way to smiles or laughter. The songs the soldiers and people wrote about spoke about the war and how it was either cruel or good. The songs also talked about religion saying lines like “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;”(Battle Hymn of the Republic, http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/b/h/bhymnotr.htm). Soldiers also spent most of their free time writing letters to their love ones, playing sports, swimming, and putting on plays to get the war off their minds (Hart, 125). It was hard for the soldiers to try to find things to do but they had to make due, letters were the lead way for the main part of their free time.
The Civil War was not only hard on the soldiers; it was also hard on the family members at home waiting for their love ones to come home. During the Civil War families were left home with deaths, losing friends and family at war. The most important thing they dealt with day to day was not having their loved ones around while being away for along period of time, and wondering if they would ever return home. The Civil War brought a lot of hurt and pain for not only the loved ones of the people that were at war but mainly for the solders that had to deal with being away from them for so long. The family members would write letters back in forth telling each other about every day life and how they were doing. Sometimes they didn’t have any words to say because of how much pain they were feeling. Children without their father’s, brothers, or uncles would write them, telling them how much they missed them. They would ask question like how they were doing, tell them upcoming events in their life, and what that did from day to day. In a letter to her father Georgiana talks to her father about how she was sick so she wasn’t able to write him as soon as she would have liked to, she also says she feels better and for him not to worry bout her (Transcript of a letter from Georgiana Tillotson to her father, Letters From The War, The Gilder Lehrman Collection). A wife writes in a letter to her husband about how she really doesn’t know what she is going to do without him in her life. She goes on saying that she has knows what he is going through is rough but talks about how se really wants him to come home because things are really starting to get crazy at home (transcript of a letter from Maxine Jones to her Husband, Letters From The War, The Gilder Lehrman Collection). For soldiers without out these letters they really could not go on. The letters were a little sparks to make the soldier think that they can go on a little more.
For soldiers in the war Medical Care was not that good at all. Many soldiers who were wounded in battle died where they fell. Those who were found right away often faced severe blows, in were mainly not in the best of hands with the military doctors (Hart, 125). In the 1800’s the knowledge of medical terms and diseases was quite limited because they did no how to treat the soldiers. The surgeons normally worked in clothes that were covered in blood, which was not good for the wounded soldier. They also wiped their hands on their jackets then dipped their surgical tools in dirty water. They also used to use the same tools back to back sometimes without even cleaning them (Hart, 125). Another thing that made the soldiers sick was the water; in this case the soldiers would wash in the water then drink it. Mainly all the soldiers that died died from unsanitary conditions in the camp (Hart, 125).
In conclusion the Civil War was a brutal war with lots of ups and downs. Soldiers were not given the respect they deserved and were not treated well. The Civil War is one of the bloodiest wars and was a poorly constructed war. Surgeons were not prepares and did not have the correct education to try to save any ones life. Family members lost love for no reason in their eyes. As many people that died in the Civil War, is as many people that could have stayed alive in result of things live new weapons that killed even more soldiers.

Spring meets Summer

As seasons come and seasons go.... people change and people grow! If you really think about that statement and ask yourself what season are you in of your maturing stage; what would you say? Well i know i would have to say; i really don't know!, because i am tied in between the two spring and summer, so i guess i would have to say Spring meets Summer. Spring for me is my childish ways, laughing and joking around all the time. Life Changing moments can also bring you to the point where you must grow up and be a man, death to me is the moment. Mommy always says to me " You can always joke and play around but there comes i time when you must grow up and be a man", it took me some time to understand what she was really saying when she said that to me; now i think its time i say i do understand.

Childish acts to some people is not the best way to go in this world today; but for me it shows who i am and where i can go in life. Spring for me is not acting like a child its still having the mind set of a child at times. I can turn this mood off at times and at other times it is higher then normal. My youthful mind set can bring on happiness for some people and angry for others. I remember when i used to go out with friends and act like a fool, we used to mess wit people. When we were out we would yell at people and trow things at people, it was really really bad..that's why i feel i should grow up and become the man i no i can be.

Growing up for me is not easy at all. I want to do this and have to do that but have to think again before i make the wrong move. Seating down in my room wondering why my cable is cut off, trowing a fit and crying aloud. i have to think twice and say why? My mother trying to give me a better life; and me just seating there making a big deal; is getting us now where. So i finally say its time for Cornelius Talley to do something. Not a job not sell drugs just grow up and be a MAN.

Success to some people may not be a growing stage for some people but for me it is. In the world that we live in today i no have to do anything and everything to come out on top. This 10th grade year has been very hard but its not over yet. Some days are good and some aren't that good . My spring always shows up and summer seems to not be coming. Don't know what to do so i just keep on trying. This always allows me to do better.

Saying where i am in life is not the most fun thing to do it makes you look at yourself and tell yourself that its time to make changes in your growing process of life. Life is like a Giant tree some can come and cut you down but you also keep growing when its all done. For me life experiences can bring me down at times, but it's up to me to keep on going ad believing that i can do anything and everything.
